The quick answer: Yes, bananas are safe to feed to dogs in moderation—just remove the peel first!

Bananas, once touted as the “world’s most perfect food,” are the go-to healthy snack for humans, especially post-workout or mid-marathon. However for dogs, bananas are best enjoyed in moderation.

Benefits of bananas

High in fiber and low in sodium and cholesterol, bananas are a healthy treat for dogs and an excellent source of potassium and magnesium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C. Bananas contain high amounts of naturally occurring sugars, so they’re best served in moderation. As a general rule, fruits should make up no more than 10-20% of a dog’s diet.

Hazards of bananas for dogs

Feeding too many bananas can lead to gastrointestinal distress, either in the form of constipation or upset tummy. Consumption of excess sugar can also lead to weight gain or cause complications in diabetic dogs. Too many bananas can also result in hyperkalemia, which is an overabundance of potassium in the dog’s system (however, it would require far more bananas than your dog is probably willing to eat to reach this point).

Though banana peels are not toxic, they are difficult to digest and can cause internal blockage if swallowed. Some pets have allergies, while others simply will not eat a banana. If you notice your pet has an unexpected reaction to banana, consult your veterinarian.

What about dried banana chips?

Watch out for the sugar! Most dried fruits have high levels of sugar, and some manufacturers even go so far as frying banana slices as well – not healthy for a pup to eat! Your best bet is to make your own, like this recipe from Fido Bakery.
