What’s the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary?
Healthy Paws has been highlighting the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary over the month by sharing their story as well as posting about the Senior Paw Project. Created to honor the life of Catherine Violet Hubbard, a little girl who loved animals and sadly lost her life at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, the organization works to spread kindness and make a difference for animals and the people who care for them.
What’s the “Butterfly Party”?
The 5th annual community event, hosted by the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary, celebrates the life of sweet Catherine Hubbard to benefit the foundation’s development of the new animal sanctuary in Newtown. This year, the event celebrates its 5-year milestone and also falls on an extra special day – June 8 – which would have been Catherine’s 13th birthday.
The event brings to life sanctuary programs and initiatives while construction is planned for the physical CVH Animal Sanctuary, an expansive 34-acre destination for animal welfare and education, slated to open in Newtown. Upon completion, the sanctuary will be home to a state of the art veterinary intake facility, a companion and farm animal refuge, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center, and education center offering animal and nature programming for the public.
In March, preliminary site work for phase 1 construction of the sanctuary began, with the building of a retaining wall for the 12,000 sq. foot native “Butterfly Garden.” The garden will provide a crucial food and migration space for butterfly species and pollinators.
Jenny Hubbard, Catherine’s mother, spoke about the inspiration behind this annual event. “Catherine had a natural ability to connect with and care for animals. She loved being in their presence and would whisper to them, “Tell all your friends I am kind.” Every year, Catherine asked for a birthday party that would bring all of her favorite creatures together, and with Catherine’s Butterfly Party, that wish is fulfilled.”
What can I expect at the event?
Last year, over 6,000 people attended the event, and over 70 homeless animals found their forever home. We’ve got it on good authority that this year’s event is going to be the biggest one yet, featuring 28+ animals rescue organizations, 100+ adoptable pets, live wildlife demonstrations, pet-related vendors, local artisans, food trucks, live music, entertainment and endless activities for kids. Additionally, Lee Asher (animal advocate and rescuer that you may know from Asher House) will be stopping by as part of his nationwide rescue tour from 1 to 3pm.
