Healthy Paws is excited to announce the recipients of the 2019 Fall Academic Scholarships!

We’re happy to start off the Fall 2019 school year by awarding scholarships to two worthy college students. Recipients were chosen based on educational merits and extracurricular dedication to improving animal welfare.

There were two different scholarship categories, each with a $1,000 grant to help pay for tuition. The Animal Advocate Scholarship is designated for a student with significant volunteer experience enrolled in an accredited institution in the United States. The Veterinary Student Scholarship is designated for a student enrolled in an accredited vet medicine program in the United States.

Fall 2019 Recipients

  • Lauren Shusterman, Animal Advocate Scholarship Recipient

“I am very grateful to Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for awarding me a scholarship to help make my professional and childhood dreams come true! Veterinary school, though incredibly interesting and rewarding, is very time intensive and expensive so every penny counts. The less a student has to worry about the financial burden of an education, the more time they can dedicate to enjoying their studies and exploring their chosen career. In my case, this has recently included volunteering for a veterinary focused high school summer camp and a local wildlife shelter. I have always been passionate about aiding creatures who cannot speak for themselves and furthering the veterinary interest in others because it is a subject which affects entire communities, animals and humans combined. The animal-human bond is an incredible phenomenon, and I am so grateful to be in veterinary school learning how to better educate communities about the profession, the importance of caring for wildlife and endangered species, and the amazing science behind how to properly care for animals.” Ms. Shusterman is attending Ohio State University.

  • Ava Abuchaei, Veterinary Student Scholarship Recipient

“Though I’m not sure exactly which area of veterinary medicine I want to focus on (mixed animal, small animal, exotics, public health, education), I do know that I want to help animals. My passion for animals stems from a childhood spent volunteering in animal-filled environments and seeing people come alive when they touched a sea urchin for the first time or said ‘hello’ to Blanca, the white cockatoo. I saw how animals had this magical power to awaken the curiosity in others and myself and cause us to abandon all social norms and instead squeal with excitement and cross a street to pet a stranger’s puppy. As a goofy kid (and adult), it was refreshing to see these humorous shifts in people’s behavior; I knew I wanted to infuse myself in animal-rich environments. This scholarship will help me put the anxiety I have about paying off my loans on the backburner for a bit and instead remind me of why I chose to pursue this field- to help animals and their owners get the best possible care.” Ms. Abuchaei is attending UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

Healthy Paws wishes these students as well as all of the other candidates the best of luck in their endeavors.
