As you hit the water with your canine companion in tow this summer, here’s how you can make sure they stay safe and happy.

What to do

  • Create an emergency plan: think through the steps to take if your dog goes overboard
  • Designate a potty spot: dogs need a break every once in a while– use puppy pads, grass pads, or make regular shoreline visits
Protect your pet

What to bring

  • Dog life jacket: it’s a good idea to have a life jacket for any dog aboard a boat, even the strong swimmers, because even experienced swimmers can get tired or swept up by waves
  • Plenty of fresh water: make sure to have plenty of drinking water available to your dog as they can quickly become dehydrated from swimming, heat, and sunshine
  • Long line leash: this allows your dog to enjoy a good swim without getting too far away from the shoreline or boat
  • Dog first aid kit: include items like antibiotic ointment and Dramamine* (ask your vet)
  • Pet-friendly sunscreen: dogs with thin or light fur are especially prone to sunburn
