Young Entrepreneur Starts Organic Dog Treat Business

While perusing social media, we stumbled upon a little girl selling homemade dog treats and were immediately intrigued – who was she and where did this passion for pups come from? As big fans of homemade dog food and treat recipes, we wanted to know more. Her name is Ava, and she’s a young entrepreneur who loves animals, and has big plans for a dog- and cat-filled future with her company, Ava’s Pet Palace.

Healthy Paws (HP): Tell us a little bit about yourself and your pets at home.

Ava (A): My name is Ava and I love animals! I’m 9 years old (I’ll be 10 this month!) and just finished 4th grade. My favorite color is pink and my favorite food is mac and cheese. I have five pets: three hermit crabs named Cucumber, Dash, and Dot; a 9-year-old male orange tabby named Pumpkin; and a chubby-wubby hamster named Timmy. I love my pets so much!

HP: What inspired you to start making treats? Have you learned a lot about pet food?

A: I really love animals and I think they should eat just as well as we do. [My family and I] try to eat all organic foods and our pets should too! I’ve thought about Ava’s Pet Palace for a couple of years now. It’s going to be a grand place! There will be a vet, hotel, store, daycare, restaurant, shelter, and a play area all in one. We thought starting with pet treats would be a great way to learn the business.

I’ve learned that a lot of pets have allergies to wheat, corn or soy. I’ve learned that a lot of people would like to feed their pet an organic and non-GMO diet as well. I’m always excited to meet people that believe their pets deserve good food.

HP: I read that you want to be a veterinarian when you grow up – what do you like about helping animals?

A: This is hard for me to answer because I don’t really know what I like about it specifically. I just really like making sure animals are happy and feel good. I like to do whatever I can to make that happen! My mom says that I’ve loved animals since I was a baby.

HP: What’s your favorite treat to make? Which one is the dogs’ favorite?

A: My favorite treats to make are Ava’s Cheeze Pleeze Bites. I like to roll the dough with my custom rolling pin and use my bone cookie cutter. I think the dogs’ favorite would be Ava’s Peanutty Paw Cookies, because what dog doesn’t like peanut butter?!

HP: You’ll soon be planning and catering pet parties – tell us about what a pet party from Ava’s Pet Palace would look like.

A: We’re so excited to offer pet parties! I think all animals should be celebrated and what better way to celebrate than a party! If the party is for dogs, it will be filled with fun doggie games and toys and lots of yummy Ava’s Pet Palace treats! We would make the guest of honor a custom cake too. My cousin Aria is helping me with the parties. She’s 8, but is already an amazing artist. She’ll help with decorations!

You can follow Ava’s pet treat business on her Facebook and Instagram.

If you love your pets as much as Ava, there’s no shortage of ways to spoil them: with dog and cat subscription boxes and special snacks like Ava’s. If you really want to give them the best, protect them with pet health insurance to ensure their long and healthy lives.
