Game of Bones: The Pups and Kitties of Healthy Paws Named After Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones Direwolf

Game of Thrones returns to HBO for its seventh (and probably second-to-last) season on July 16. The TV series, like the books before it, have spawned hordes of obsessed super-fans, some of whom have taken their passion for the Seven Kingdoms to new heights, naming their pets after their favorite characters from the story.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance has scoured their database of over a million pets to find out just how many pet parents like to imagine their four-legged friend sitting on the Iron Throne.

Whiskers Are Coming

Many pet parents have been motivated to name their cat or dog after the most honorable family in Westeros, the Starks. While the majority of this family’s members have met a most unsavory fate, the two scrappy surviving sisters, Arya and Sansa, live on to inspire viewers with their bravery and grit, perhaps the same characteristics seen in the over 900 pets named after those two members of House Stark alone. Other pets named after the Starks include Ned, Catelyn, Robb, Bran, Rickon, Benjen, Jon Snow (of course), with an honorable mention to Hodor (tear).

A Lannister Always Pays His Vets

You love to hate them on the show, and the lack of enthusiasm for the Lannisters plays out in the pet name game as well. Just 295 pets are named after the major Lannister family members who appear in the show, 58% of which are named after the only truly likable Lannister, Tyrion. The rest, in order of popularity, include Jaime, Cersei, Tywin, Joffrey, and Tommen.

Loyal Beasts

The sigil of House Stark, direwolves have been a source of inspiration for over 5,400 pet parents! Approximately 66% of those pets are named after Sansa’s ill-fated wolf, Lady, followed in popularity by Summer, Ghost, Nymeria, Grey Wind, and one lone pup named Shaggydog.

Fan Favorites

It’s no surprise that some of the most colorful characters on the show now lend their names to our furry friends, including the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys, who would probably inspire more pet parents if her name wasn’t so tough to spell. Other popular names include Brienne (of Tarth), Theon and Yara (the Greyjoy siblings), and Tormund (everyone’s favorite wildling).
